- Corporate and government strategies for the creation of innovative patents-
The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO, Commissioner Soo-won Lee) held a forum in commemoration of World Intellectual Property (IP) Day titled “Corporate and Government Strategies for the Creation of Innovative Patents” on April 26 (Thurs.) from 2 p.m. at the Korea Intellectual Property Center in Seoul.
Held in commemoration of the World Intellectual Property Day (April 26) designated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), an expert organization of the United Nations on IP, the forum had companies, the government, and the academia gather to share opinions on major policy issues related to IP and the direction of their enforcement.
Although the number of patent registrations of Korean companies was increasing, their quality still lagged behind. In particular, the increased investment in R&D and numerical consolidation of patents were not properly leading to improved performance of the companies that the companies were pondering on strategies to create powerful patents.
As such, the participants in the forum presented innovative strategies for Korean companies to acquire powerful patents to lead the market and debate measures to support this effort.
The participants foremost discussed the direction of business management strategies to pursue for the development of innovative technology and products using keywords of softpower strategies, innovative technology and corporate culture. Furthermore, the non-efficiency of a large number of patents held by Korea was analyzed and measures to improve discussed in order to enhance the effectiveness of innovations at the stage of acquiring rights.
Companies leading business management based on IP, scholars on business management based on technology, lawyers and patent attorneys, KIPO and the Korea Institute of Intellectual Property participated in the forum to exchange various experiences and opinions.
Deputy Commissioner Yeong-min Kim of KIPO said, “To create demand in an era of highly developed technology, it is important to develop products of a new concept by merging knowledge and technology instead of improving inventions.” He continued, “KIPO plans to expand support for Korean companies to use IP rights to predict products and core original technology of the future market and strongly protect the created innovations.”
