Last year, Samsung SDI (CEO: KIM, Soon Taek) filed most patent applications related to Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED), the display of the next generation.
According to ‘2005 patent trend analysis related to OLED,’ announced on March 16 by a surveying agency OLEDNET (CEO: LEE, Chung Hoon), Samsung SDI filed 476 disclosed patents and 131 registered patents related to OLED last year. With a total of 607 applications, the company filed the most patents in the world related to OLED.
Looking at other domestic companies, LG Electronics marked 3rd place in disclosed patents with 200 applications, and 4th place in registered patents with 56 applications. LG Philips LCD marked 4th place in disclosed patents with 144 applications, and 3rd place in registered patents with 81 applications. Such outstanding figures by Korean companies are noteworthy.
Behind Samsung SDI is Seiko-Epson in Japan, marking 2nd with 402 applications in disclosed patents and 83 applications in registered patents (a total of 485). Semiconductor Energy Lab (SEL) in Japan marked 5th with 183 applications (143 disclosed, 40 registered).
Analyzing the status of the top 10 patent companies, the OLED industry in Korea is developing based on panel industry, while that in Japan is developing based on parts and materials. Also, analyzing the registered patent trends of Korea, US, and Japan during 1994 to 2005, the number of registered patents in Korea gradually increased starting in 2000. In 2005, the number marked 437, showing a strong trend. This number is more than double compared to 187 in 2004.
