The ceremony to commemorate the 48th Korea Invention Day, hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO, Commissioner Kim Young-min) and organized by the Korea Invention Promotion Association (Chairman Kim Gwang-lim), was held in the Grand Ballroom of the 63 Building, on May 15.
The ceremony is a cross-national event held annually to inspire a spirit of invention in the public and boost the morale of inventors by rewarding those contributing to inventions and the enhancement of Korea’s national competitiveness.
At the ceremony a total of 79 inventors were presented with awards, including the Order of Industrial Service Merit and Presidential Citations among others, after undergoing rigorous selection and evaluation by a panel of experts. Around 600 guests took part in the event alongside President Park Geun-hye, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Yoon Sang-jick and the heads of invention groups.
The major award of Invention King of the Year was given to the inventor showing the best direction in science and technology and creating the best new technology of the past year through innovation and R&D.
The Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit, the highest order of merit for the industrial sector, was awarded to the President of the IT and Mobile Communication Division at Samsung Electronics, Shin Jong-kyun, who led the global trend in mobiles by developing innovative smartphones.
Ahn Jun-gi, a senior researcher at LG Electronics, had the honor of winning the Invention King of the Year award. Mr. Ahn set new standards for international digital mobile communications and helped raise the status and image of Korea. He also consolidated international standard patents in digital mobile communications, contributing to improving the technology trade balance for the country.
“IPRs are one of the key factors that will determine a company’s and a country’s value in future societies,” said KIPO Commissioner Kim Young-min. “We will continue to work hard in the future to inspire people’s desire to invent and boost the morale of inventors.”
