The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO, Commissioner Lee Soowon) had a series of bilateral meetings with delegations from 12 intellectual property (IP) offices during the Assemblies of the member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), an UN special agency on intellectual property. The delegations discussed cooperative activities to provide more convenient and efficient IP-related services.
In particular, Commissioner Lee and Director General Alberto Casado Cerviño of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on bilateral cooperation. The MOU defines the areas of cooperation, among which are staff training, sharing of patent examination know-how, and granting access of the Spanish patent examiners to the Korean Traditional Knowledge database for the purpose of prior art search.
KIPO also signed an MOU with the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Intellectual Property Protection of Peru, The Peruvian institute agreed to designate KIPO as its International Searching Authority (ISA) under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) by signing the MOU. Peru is the thirteenth country which designated KIPO as its ISA.
